Another of the former Patriotic Front supporters Peter Sinkamba has labelled President Michael Sata a dictator.
Sinkamba, who has formed a new political party called Green Party, said on Radio Phoenix’s Let The People Talk that President Sata appeared determined to turn Zambia into a one party state.
He joins the growing list of former PF die hards that have jumped off the boat among them Mike Mulongoti, George Mpombo and Father Frank Bwalya who have all founded political parties.
“The PF is moving towards creating a One Party State and we are very worried. They seem determined to create an environment that makes it impossible for other political parties to function,” he said.
“It is very worrying we need to have an atmosphere where everyone can express their opinion.”
Sinkamba, who was one of the founders of a once popular PF-aligned facebook page The Zambia People’s Pact from where Panji Kaunda earned his government appointment before going under, said the opposition leaders were being arrested for holding peaceful and indoor meetings.
“Let the people decide not based on intimidation, trampling on them that is not democracy. That is dictatorship.”
Sinkamba said, “We hope they do not create a dejure political party which means that will be by law. But now the way they are going they are creating a defacto One Party because they are making it difficult for other parties to exist.”
He said people were not allowed to hold rallies or meet chiefs without the police arresting them.
“This whole experience is bad where they have been denying political parties the right to hold rallies, to meet chiefs and hold workshops without being arrested. It is hurting the image of the country,” he said.
“We are not impressed with the direction the PF is taking this country.”
He said he withdrew his support to the PF because they had backtracked on the many promises they made during campaigns.
“Some of the issues that forced me to leave were their failure on commitments we made to the people and benefits sharing,” said the man who was part of the People’s Pact that campaigned for Sata during the 2011 elections.
He said the Green Party was the only one that was firmly anchored on an ideology.
The long term environmental activist said his party believed in ecological wisdom, participatory democracy, social justice, respect for diversity, non violence and sustainability.
