Opposition Movement for Multi-Party Democracy (MMD) vice-president Brian Chituwo says the onus is on the former ruling party to give hope and stop members from leaving the former ruling party.
Dr Chituwo says defections from one political party to the other will always be there but that it is up to political parties losing members to make them attractive.
He adds that political party leaders should also build confidence in their members and make them believe in their leadership.
Dr Chituwo notes that membership to a political party is voluntary hence the movement from one party to another is a democratic process and a question of choice.
And Dr Chituwo says there will be nothing wrong with the UPND merging with the MMD as both parties are made up of human being and not objects.
