zambia-hiv-antiretroviralsThe Ministry of Health has confirmed the shortage of Anti Retroviral Drugs at three major clinics in Lusaka.

Ministry spokesperson Reuben Mbewe said the problem had been caused by a delay in the shipment of the commodity from the manufacturer outside the country.

The three large health centres affected are Chawama, Matero and Ngwerere which are among the heavily populated areas in the capital city.

Mbewe said the shortage of Truvada was because the manufacturer had run out of a commodity that was part of the manufacturing process.

He said 91, 500 tonnes were expected in the country in a fortnight and patients had been advised in places where the commodity is still available have been advised to only restrict themselves to a week’s supply instead of the required one month.

Mbewe said 400, 000 tonnes were expected in September while in October the country could receive 300, 000 tonnes.
