The Electoral Commission of Zambia says it cannot bar a candidate whose seat has been nullified without evidence of conviction.
And Director of Communications in the office of the MMD president Muhabi Lungu says the move was aimed at isolating former Petauke Central MP Dora Siliya.
ECZ acting Public Relations Officer Sylvia Bwalya said the institution could only disqualify a candidate upon evidence of conviction and a letter from the registrar of the court.
She said the ECZ was on firm ground in accordance of section 104 of the constitution.
Bwalya said she was saddened that Transparency International Zambia had decided to engage the ECZ through the media.
And Lungu said the call for MPs whose seats were nullified to be barred were targeted at the outspoken Siliya whose election was nullified by the courts.
