The Southern African Centre for Constructive Resolution of Disputes (SACCORD) says the Zambian government should not only ask the international community to lift the sanctions on Zimbabwe but also encourage the Southern African country to espouse democratic values.
Executive director Boniface Chembe said the Robert Mugabe government should address the deteriorating human rights situation that has been noted by the human rights watch groups.
“The calls by the Zambian government to the international community to lift sanctions on Zimbabwe is desirable, but Zambia should also encourage the Zimbabwean government to be more democratic,” Chembe said.
“They should also take note of the concerns raised by the Human Rights groups about the abuse of citizens by the Zimbabwean government. Zambia should also be alive to the difficulties and suffering of ordinary Zimabweans government at the hands of their government.”
Chembe said it was a well known fact that elections in Zimbabwe were disputed and therefore there was need to carefully look at the matter before rushing to endorse the poll.
President Michael Sata has since congratulated Mugabe on his victory in the controversial poll that will see the 89 year old stay in power beyond the 33 years he has been at the helm.
