Kabwe-based freelance Journalist Wilson Mpondamali today appeared in the Kabwe Magistrates Court judged for allegedly stealing a book in the Library and possession of military stores.
The obscure charges are a far cry from the initial charge of sedition and defamation of the president that was being pushed by the authorities.
However, Mpondamali’s case has been adjourned to September, 30 for mention.
“I appeared before the Kabwe Magistrates court today for alleged theft of library book and possession of military stores for the fourth time after that search which was preceded by a two days’ detention last month,” he wrote on his social network facebook page.
“We are still awaiting instructions from DPP and matter has been adjourned to 30th September, 2013 for another mention and possible trial.”
He said, “I shall however be required in court to answer to alleged malicious damage and attempted escape from lawful custody on 30th August. ”
Mpondamali has thanked the people that have supported him through the period that the mighty of the state has weighed heavily on him.
“Thank you all for being there for me as we await this case which is before our honourable courts. I love you all!”
Mpondamali is one of three journalists that state has arrested for allegedly having links to online publications that have been critical of the state.
The other two are former Evelyn Hone College Journalism lecturer Clayson Hamasaka and freelance journalist Thomas Zyambo.
