Choma Central Member of Parliament Cornelius Mweetwa says the loss by Patriotic Front candidate David Phiri who had ditched the opposition Movement for Multi-party Democracy was a good lesson to would be defectors.
Mweetwa, who congratulated the MMD for their landslide victory in Mkaika, said defectors would now think twice before crossing the floor.
“We would like to congratulate the MMD on their victory in Mkaika and see it as a boost to the aspirations and strength of the opposition in the country,” he said.
“On the other hand it is a lesson for the defectors who cause unnecessary by-elections because the people have shown that they do not like these by-elections. Looking ahead the PF should brace for more defeats for the many by-elections caused by them that are coming up.”
MMD’s Peter Phiri overwhelmingly won the Mkaika seat polling 9,074 with PF’s David Phiri in a distant second on 1752.
