Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini was forced to order Home Affairs Minister Edgar Lungu to isssue a Ministerial Statement following the Zambia Police Force’s consistently allowing Patriotric Front cadres to be the only ones allowed to demonstrate without any permit.
The Speaker made the ruling after a point of order raised by Choma Central Member of Parliament Cornelius Mweetwa who wanted to know why the police had consistently allowed PF cadres to march freely while other groupings in the country were permanently barred from exercising their right to assemble.
Matibini ordered Lungu to issue a Ministerial Statement on the status quo.
PF cadres have had freehand in their protests with police watching and in some instances aiding them on their processions.
The opposition have often met a brick wall as police have always claimed that they are undestaffed and have forcibly broken up any attempted gatherings.
