President Michael Sata has ordered the suspension of over 100 nurses following a weeklong strike action that started off at the University Teaching Hospital in Lusaka before spreading to other parts of the country.
The Head of State has ordered UTH management to discipline the nurses for embarrassing the government and wants some of them punished to serve as a lesson to others who may intend to take similar action in future.
Letters of disciplinary action have been served to about a 100 nurses so far.
Yesterday, the nurses called off their strike but set December 22 as the deadline for government to address their grievances.
The nurses that have been on strike for over eight days met on Sunday and agreed to return to work to allow government attend to their demands.
However, they have promised to resume the strike action if government fails to meet their demands.
The nurses are demanding that the distortions in the salary structure be addressed and also want a 100 percent salary increment to be buttressed by a night duty and housing allowance
