The Zambia Medical Association has joined calls for government to reinstate the fired nurses and midwives if Zambia is to have a realistic chance of meeting the Millennium Development Goal on health.
Association president Aaron Mujajati said government should note that Zambia already had a shortfall of health personnel with the nurse patient ratio very wide.
Mujajati said a lot of money had already been spent on training the nurses and their experience could not be easily replaced.
“We appeal to government to revise its decision to dismiss the nurses because this will seriously throw the country’s attainment of the Millennium Development Goals on health in serious jeopardy,” he said.
