The Alliance for Democracy and Development says the Zambia Revenue Authority has no capacity to collect taxes from the mining sector as the firms do their best to dodge paying taxes.
ADD President Charles Milupi said it was also difficult to rely on the Patriotic Front government to collect the taxes as they had backpedalled on mineral royalties after championing the cause whilst in opposition.
Milupi said ZRA needed to be strengthened to ensure that they helped the country reap rewards from the mining industry.
“You see ZRA has no capacity to collect relevant taxes in the mining sector they are very weak because the mining firms are very sophisticated and do all sorts of things no ensure that they do not pay taxes,” he said.
“The Patriotic Front has also shown lack of willingness to ensure that the country reaps enough from the mining sector as they have refused to introduce the windfall tax that they so much campaigned for whilst in opposition.”
