Labour Minister Fackson Shamenda says it will be irresponsible for government to rescind its decision to fire over 200 nurses that had gone on strike demanding better pay as promised to them by government under the newly signed collective bargaining agreement.
Shamenda said if government went back on its word it would breed chaos in the labour market.
“I want to say that it will be irresponsible for government to reverse its decision to fire over 200 nurses because it will promote anarchy in the labour market,” he said.
“We should have an organized system where management negotiates with the labour unions and not just because you want more money you go on strike.”
Shamenda said: “Even where there is a bad law you have to sit down and negotiate so we will not rescind our decision.”
Shamenda’s stance is a stark contrast to his outburst against Shoprite management who he ordered to re-instate all dismissed workers who had gone on strike.
Management had told employees to re-apply and Shamenda halted that process threatening the chain store with revocation of their trading licence.
Government has fired over 200 nurses and midwives and asked them to re-apply for their positions.
