Health Deputy Minister of Chitalu Chilufya says only 234 nurses and midwives have been dismissed across the country.
However, the numbers given by the newly appointed minister are inconsistent with what has been given by his superiors and the University Teaching Hospital.
Chilufya said 141 nurses had been sacked at the University Teaching Hospital with 49 at Levy Mwanawasa and 44 at Livingstone General Hospital.
On Tuesday, the University Teaching Hospital said 100 nurses had been reinstated while the fate of the other 150 at the institution is yet to be decided.
On the same day a further 60 nurses were given dismissal letters further adding to the numbers.
Chilufya said the UTH had engaged 63 new nurses, 23 at Levy Mwanawasa and 16 at Livingstone General Hospital.
