Fertilizer PlantAgriculture Deputy Minister Rogers Mwewa has revealed that government used the Office of the President to investigate the capability of local contractors to supply Urea top dressing fertilizer to districts across the country.

Mwewa said the secret service recommended that other options be considered as local suppliers did not have the capacity.

He said government was still trying to tie up contracts for transporters to haul the 41, 000 metric tonnes of fertilizer to the rest of the country.

Mwewa said the Office of the President reported that local contractors were trying to partner with international firms upon learning that there will be tendering for the supply of fertilizer.

Government purchased 41, 000 metric tonnes of fertilizer from Saudi Arabia and the cargo came through the port of Dare-sa-laam but delayed in being couriered to Zambia due to a legal challenge by Nyiombo Investments who government owes money and filed an injunction to restrain railway company TAZARA from ferrying the Zambia bound fertilizer.

The fertilizer ended up being put on trucks that government hurriedly hired.
