The Law Association of Zambia says government should begin preparing the way for a referendum over the new constitution because it is very clear that is what Zambians want.
LAZ Honorary Secretary Linda Kasonde said once the draft constitution is released government should facilitate for a referendum.
“When the draft constitution is released what the people of Zambia want to see is a constitution that is adopted through a referendum. They should be given a chance to say that this is a document that we want,” she said.
“We the people of Zambia hold the final say on whether it is yes or no to this new constitution and that is what should happen as it is what Zambians have long insisted on.”
The constitution making process has stalled with President Michael Sata saying Zambia only needs amendments to the current constitution.
There has also been dust raised over the Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba’s directive to the Technical Committee that they print only 10 copies for the President only, a directive they have defied and refused to sign the draft.
