The United Party for National Development has also chorused the opposition MMD complaint to the Electoral Commission of Zambia (ECZ) over President Michael Sata’s premature campaigns in the yet to be declared election dates for Vubwi and Malambo constituencies.
The MMD on Monday wrote to the ECZ complaining over President Sata’s campaign trail in Eastern Province over the weekend despite the fate of the by-elections in the two constituencies being subject of a court process.
UPND vice president Canicius Banda said the Head of State was promoting lawlessness by breaching the constitution as regards its position on campaigns.
“We are very saddened with the conduct of President Michael Sata by going to campaign before the Electoral Commission of Zambian has declared the election dates for Vubwi and Malambo constituencies. The President is exhibiting lawlessness by going campaigning which is against the Electoral Code of Conduct,” Banda said.
“President Sata’s conduct is at variance with the constitution and this behaviour has got to be stopped.”
President Sata has come under severe criticism for opening campaigns before the ECZ announces dates for by-elections.
Initially the elections were set for January 7 but the ECZ postponed following a legal challenge by incumbents Maxwell Mwale and Eustackio Kazonga (Vubwi) who have contested their ineligibility in the Lusaka High Court.
