The Law Association of Zambia says it is considering suing ZNBC for its biased coverage of news.
LAZ President James Banda said the association had written to ZNBC expressing their displeasure and were due for a meeting which if not satisfactory could trigger legal action.
“They call themselves a national broadcaster which they are not. Like it or not they are not. They are still to quote a popular phrase a government mouthpiece,” Banda said.
“No matter what they tell you ZNBC is still a government mouthpiece. I do not think there is anybody at ZNBC starting from the Director General who can challenge this there is still a lot of work to be done at ZNBC.
He said, “If you recall in 2011 just prior to the lection the LAZ DID query ZNBC over the coverage they were giving to opposition political parties and we did say, we will take this matter to court if you do not improve. So the elections came and went, we had a meeting with ZNBC where it was agreed that the policy be changed when Given Lubinda was minister where it was agreed that this issue be changed.”
The LAZ head said ZNBC had reneged on their promise for fair coverage.
“We have noticed again that they have slid back. We have written to ZNBC and they have written back because the issues that we raised have been resuscitated we are due with a meeting with them,” he said.
“The ZNBC Act is very clear on how ZNBC should operate if we do not reach any joy on how ZNBC is being run we will go to court. It can be resolved there.”
The Chibamba Kanyama headed institution has resorted to one party style coverage that gives acres of airwaves to the Head of State and his praise singers while blacking out dissenting views.
