Over 67, 000 pupils were absent for the 2013 grade nine examinations.
Education Minister John Phiri announced that 107, 000 pupils made it to grade 10 with about 160, 000 failing the examinations.
Phiri said the boys had scored higher than the girls with 57, 000 passing while 53, 000 girls made it to grade 10.
North Western Province recorded the lowest pass rate.
