The Zambia Small Scale Farmers Association have voiced their concerns over the fertilizer distribution exercise saying it has been the worst the country has experienced in the recent past.
Organization chairperson Edward Nsama said there were a lot of anomalies in the exercise with government falling back to Nyiombo Investments with whom they had clashed over the shipment of the commodity from Tanzania after the company filed an injunction in Tanzania restraining the railway company from couriering the commodity.
Nsama said the food security of the country had been put on the line following the chaos currently on-going in the agriculture sector.
“We are deeply saddened with the manner the fertilizer distribution exercise has been handled by and we are worried that the food security of the country will be compromised,” he said.
“The way urea has been handled is worrying we had Nyiombo taking government to court in Tanzania and then again after all the delay government came back to Nyiombo so what really is the relationship between government and Nyiombo?”
There has been widespread discontent over the fertilizer distribution exercise with some farmers having resorted to protests in some parts of the country like Eastern Province and also Mbala District.
