George-MpomboPeople’s Democratic Party (PDP) President George Mpombo says the Industrial Development Council should not be chaired by President Michael Sata as it risked taking the same failed route of the UNIP era.

Mpombo, who also once served as Defence Minister. said he was less hopeful that the IDC would run efficiently under President Sata who was preoccupied with appointing only people from one region of the country.

He said the IDC could only work if it was run on the basis of professionalism and not patronage and tribal grounds.

“If as it has been proposed that the IDC will be chaired by the Head of State then I am afraid that it is going to be a failed project,” he said.

“President Sata’s record shows that 90% of his appointments are from one region which already kills the spirit of nation building. We have only seen that he is really determined to fill up positions with people from one region and that in itself shows who will benefit from the introduction of the IDC.”

President Sata announced on New Year’s Day that he will introduce the IDC and that he will chair it.

The IDC is a replica of the failed INDECO in the UNIP era and is suspected to have been introduced at the whims of President Sata’s nostalgic feeling about UNIP days.
