The Law Association of Zambia says convicted Movement for Multi Party Democracy Chisamba Member of Parliament Moses Muteteka should resign his position.
LAZ Honorary Secretary Linda Kasonde said Muteteka should step down until the court process is exhausted to avoid leaving the people of Chisamba without representation for a long time.
Kasonde said the law was clear that an MP could not continue serving once convicted of a crime and that where he appealed it was imperative for the legislator to step aside.
Muteteka was last Thursday handed a five year jail sentence for theft of a motor vehicle belonging to the Chibombo District Council.
He has appealed his conviction in the Lusaka High Court and was granted a k2, 000 cash bail with two working sureties.
