The recent summoning of former Minister of Defence Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba (GBM) by the anti-corruption authorities is a politically motivated act, says political activist Dante Saunders.
Speaking in an interview with Zambia Reports, Saunders said that actions being taken by the administration of President Michael Sata indicate an arbitrary posture toward a former ally (and family member).
The Kasama Central MP was issued a warn and caution by the Zambian Police at Woodlands yesterday, and stands accused of abuse of authority relating to a contract for the supply of wooden poles to state-owned utility ZESCO from his company Arizona Marketing and Distributors.
In facing the accusations, GBM has published messages on his Facebook page indicating he does not intend to resign: “I have resolved not to yield unless I am expelled from PF. I appeal for calm and restraint from my supporters and friends.”
Saunders said the summoning and impending arrest of GBM and his family over alleged corrupt business activities had shown that Mr Sata was no longer interested in humanity, commenting that Sata would neither be the first nor the last president of Zambia and that he will know what it is to be a former president once he vacates power in 2016.
“If Mr Geoffrey Mwamba is a thief, then Sata is a bigger thief. If Mwamba has stolen, then Sata is a product of criminal activities because Mr Mwamba spent colossal ammounts of money and other resources on the campaign and Mr Sata as an individual and the Patrotic Front (PF) as a party,” he said.
Speaking from Lusaka, Saunders said that Sata had decided to abandon Mwamba now because the former Defence Minister was seen as a critical voice against the PF, whose popularity has been in free fall.
Saunders said it was immoral and hypocritical behaviour for Sata to accuse Mwamba of stealing now that they were no longer friends.
He said posterity will judge Sata very harshly because of the lies, trickery and torment he was unleashing on the people of God.
“Sata’s ending will be very bad. He is now persecuting the people who took him where he is. The ordinary Zambians who he told lies to be the President are suffering and people are dying everyday because of his lies. He will fall with a very big thud,” said Saunders.
He said Sata’s chance to redeem himself was not lost because he could still apologise to the Zambians and do the correct thing.
The police have slapped eight criminal charges of former Defence minister Geoffrey Mwamba. The police have also summoned Mwamba’s wife Chama and daughter Sibongile for interrogations relating to the acquisition of government tenders.
