Former Prime Minister General Malimba Masheke has chorused the Council of Churches in Zambia’s call not to celebrate Independence as there was too much poverty in the country.
Masheke said the jubilee mark this year should be a sorrowful event as the country had not seen the benefits of having won Independence.
On Tuesday Council of Churches in Zambia General Secretary Reverend Suzanne Matale said there was no need for Zambians to celebrate 50 years of Independence as Zambians were still wallowing in poverty and were enduring unfulfilled promises by the politicians.
Masheke said Zambians should use the occasion to reflect on the kind of country they were living in.
Zambia this year marks 50 years since claiming political independence from the British government.
