Focus on Constitution at Parliament

ParliamentParliamentary business resumes today with the demands for a new constitution very much in focus after business was twice suspended last week after opposition Members of Parliament protested.

The standoff had forced the Speaker of the National Assembly Patrick Matibini to call for a cease fire meeting set for today though the ruling Patriotic Front has insisted that they will not attend.

Opposition lawmakers had been incensed by Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba’s Ministerial Statement that fell short of addressing their concerns on the constitution.

The MPs converged at the centre of the chamber refusing to move until clear direction was given on the matter.

Ruling party youths commandeered by provincial youth chairperson Kennedy Kamba have announced that they will descend on parliament to restore order should opposition MPs continue their protest.

The PF presence is likely to be met with equal force from opposition UPND youth who have promised to resist any attempts by the ruling party to brutalize their leaders.

Last week the Zambia Police refused the UPND a permit to stage a demonstration outside parliament BUT PF cadres will most likely conduct their demonstration with full police protection.
