The United States government has backed calls for a people driven constitution by opposition Members of Parliament.

US Charge de Affairs to Zambia David Young said the constitution was an important document and therefore people’s voices needed to be heard.

Young said if Zambians felt the current law was inadequate they had every right to demand for a new one using any democratic tool.

He also noted the deteriorated human rights situation in the country.

Young also said the arrest of Human Rights activist Enock Kasonkomona was an affront on the right to freedom of speech.

“That is a serious concern people need to have the right to speak out, a person being able to go on a television station and state his views on a particular issue even though it is a controversial issue. That is a fundamental right in the Zambian constitution that a person should be able to exercise,” he said.

Young said the killing of inmates in Kabwe at Mukobeko Maximum Prison, the arrest of opposition leaders and the killing of residents over a land row in Kampasa were some of the tragic human rights abuses.

“People have lost their lives in those kinds of tragic cases I would strongly support action it is very important that people be brought to justice for those kind of crimes,” he said.
