Political Activist Dante Saunders has alleged that President Michael Sata is plotting a state of emergency in order to stop the country from going to the polls in 2016.
And Saunders has said he would write to the African Union and Southern African Development Community to alert them about problem.
He said it had become apparent that the Patrotic Front (PF) government and its machinery were spearheading violence and create anarchy in the country. He said this plan of spearheading violence and anarchy has been well thought out.
Currently, he said, the public media was being abused to project a picture that the non- governmental organisations, including opposition political parties in Zambia were sponsoring violence when it is actually the ruling party, which is doing that using government machinery and resources.
He said the latest incidents were during the just ended Katuba by-elections, where government ministers were abusing the electoral code of conduct by bribing voters, provoking opponents and instigating violence, but the public media was blaming all this on the opposition parties who were merely defending themselves from attacks.
“The aim of the plan by the government is to lure the people of Zambia to start rise against the government so that the President can have an opportunity to declare a state of emergency and stop the country from having general elections in 2016,” he said.
He said Zambians would not allow this to happen because Zambia was a democracy where people had human rights and freedoms.
“The people of Zambia want to ensure that the AU and SADC monitor our elections in 2016 and these two institutions must arrive in Zambia early enough so that they can look at the prevailing situation leading up to the general elections. Further, the AU and SADC should consider coming to Zambia to monitor some of the parliamentary bye-elections that are going on so the institutions are aware of the violence and other violations that are being perpetuated by the government and the ruling party,” he said.
Saunders said the PF must stopped from causing further harm to Zambia because their two year stay in government had destroy the country’s economy and institutions of governance.
He said the damage that the PF has caused to Zambia would only be seen after they left power because the people in government were trying so hard to hoodwink the people that the PF was doing the right things.
Saunders warned that Zambians must brace themselves for tougher times ahead if they allowed the PF to continue in government.
“The people are already suffering and feeling the bite after the prices of mealie meal and fuel were increased. Farmers were duped in the fertiliser support programme. There are many problems that the ordinary people are facing and it is a shame when we hear Sata and his ministers claim that life is improving in Zambia just because they have continued with the MMD projects of building roads, schools and clinics,” he said.
Saunders said Zambians must wake up and stop the PF from damaging the country’s good reputation both abroad and locally.
