Clik here to view. The opposition United Party for National Development says the 2013 United States Human Rights Report on Zambia has vindicated them after highlighting abuses.
UPND president Hakainde Hichilema said some people had accused them of politicking when they reported the Patriotic Front government to Commonwealth over the deteriorated human rights situation in the country.
Hichilema said it was clear to any independent minded person that the human rights situation in Zambia was in a state of deterioration.
“The 2013 United States human rights report has vindicated us. This is what we have been saying and we even reported the situation to the Commonwealth and some people thought we were just politicking,” he said.
“There is a total breakdown of law and order in the country and this is what we said about a year ago. The PF regime is brutal and it has been seen by others. They should learn to respect rights.”
The 2013 Human Rights report highlights gross human rights abuses by the Zambian government among them arrest of opposition leaders and denial of the right to assembly using the Public Order Act.
