Fourth Republican president Rupiah Banda’s press aide Dickson Jere was today among 63 lawyers admitted to the bar after passing a repeater’s examination at the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education.
Jere, an Evelyn Hone journalist who also worked for The Post in the mid 1990 as a stringer, managed to get into the ‘prestigious’ profession where he joins his former boss Fred M’membe.
Unlike M’membe who was served by the third repeater’s examination in what many believe were the most leaked ZIALE examination, Jere managed to cross the hurdle at second attempt. He studied his law degree at the University of Zambia shortly before he was appointed to serve as press aide at State House.
This morning, the Zambia Institute of Advanced Legal Education went some steps in ‘laundering’ its image by graduating 63 students, a far cry from the 12 that passed at the last sitting of examinations.
Sixty three lawyers were admitted to the bar today with loathed Chief Justice Lombe Chibesakunda saying the public should not blame ZIALE as it had increased its pass rate as seen by the 63 that were admitted to the bar.
Chibesakunda said ZIALE was hoping to strive to increase the pass rate of its students but still retain quality lawyers.
ZIALE has over the years crafted a notorious reputation of failing students at examination time.
With the school having opened itself to admitting students from private universities the enrolment has increased while the pass rate has remained dismal.
