McDonald_Chipenzi-The Foundation for Democratic Process has urged government to show maturity in the manner it is dealing with the Bemba Royal Establishment standoff.

FODEP Executive Director MacDonald Chipenzi said government should allow the traditions of the Bemba people to take precedence in resolving the problem that has seen the position of Paramount Chief Chitimukulu remain unoccupied as President Michael Sata has refused to recognize the Bemba Royal council (Bashilubemba)’s choice for the position.

Government has deployed armed policemen at the palace to prevent the BRE’s choice Henry Kanyanta Sosala take up his position.

Chipenzi said there was no need for President Sata to defile tradition by handpicking Chief Chewe as his choice for Chief Chitimukulu.

“There is nowhere in the world where a traditional leader is installed by government. Their role is only to facilitate and endorse the traditional leadership’s choice,” he said.

“What is happening is unprecedented in the history of this country and has the potential to strain relations with the traditional leadership permanently.”

The standoff has not only plagued Bembaland into uncertainty but has also so far claimed to heavies in government who are former Defence Minister Geoffrey Bwalya Mwamba and his Lukashya counterpart Alfridah Kansembe.
