The conduct of the Zambia police is fast becoming a national embarrassment. No one can reasonably defend the levels of lawlessness that our Zambia Police have been peddling since the Patriotic Front government came to power.
The Zambian Police are becoming the single most terror driven entity that Zambia is breeding. When they are not demanding bribes at road blocks, they are murdering suspects in police cells and their now favourite post Lilayi training activity crushing demonstrations.
Listening to some of the excuses that they give when they are denying citizens their rights to assembly is laughable except it is no longer a laughing matter. How else can anyone describe their shameful arrest of 46 youths wearing T-shirts demanding a new constitution? Who could ever dream up of such a stupid act? Of course non except our fast becoming useless police.
Never mind they are being directed to but there is a limit even to what instructions a dog can take from its master. Were they not ashamed that even their most imaginative or is it politically submissive Deputy Inspector General Solomon Jere could not conjure a charge for the 46 gallant youths?
Simple advice to Dr Solomon Jere, as he loves to remind all of us, although his behavior hardly suggests the title, “If you choose to lie down with dogs, you must be prepared to wake up with fleas.”
Learn from the mistakes of those before you because politicians will use and dump you. What happened in Mambwe District over the weekend is shameful and the Zambia police must take full responsibility.
No one should hide behind political instructions. Did not the police give the opposition United Party for National Development permits two weeks before the rallies were due to be held? Has not the Zambia Police FORCE not always insisted on being written to in advance before they give Zambians their right to assembly? Have they not always used it as an excuse for denying permits?
The blood thirsty police officers unashamedly descended on innocent Mambwe residents whose only crime was to turn up for a meeting that was duly constituted. Maybe someone should say something about the ease with which these women police chiefs take PF orders.
Could it be the inherently societal phobia that relegates our womenfolk to mere servants who have no spine? Otherwise how could Eastern Province Police Commissioner Grace Chipalile say the things she said? Whatever happened to the lady gentleness? She could not hide her joy at the terror inflicted by police on the innocent citizens of Mambwe District.
Madam Chipalile lessons from history often teach us that evil prospers because good people fail to act. But then these acts should not shock anyone because dictators thrive in the midst of spineless institutions and individuals.
So to the police, do the right thing and serve yourselves some dignity or maybe you are also part of the aptly labeled “useless” clan that His Excellency presides over.
