UPND leader Hakainde Hichilema says he received unequivocal message from the people of Eastern Province that they wanted a people driven constitution.
Addressing a press briefing this morning the UPND leader whose 14 day trip to the Eastern Province was violently brought to an end by the Zambia police on the second day said he obliged to return to Lusaka to save lives of innocent people.
“Our rights are now taken away, birthrights being trampled upon even to ask for our constitution is it a crime? How? How can that attract beatings?” he said.
“ By the way the people of Mambwe, Nsefu, Mukanga, Nyimba, Petauke, Sinda, Vubwi, Chadiza, Chipata, Kamawa are saying go and tell the people of Lusaka that we want our people driven constitution.”
Hichilema said, “We were physically bundled out of there and the journalists were asking questions were you beaten out of Chipata Eastern Province? The answer is No.”
He added: “ when they started the process of taking people’s lives, breaking collar bones I took a decision that life was more important and temporarily I stood or if you like retreat and re-strategize to save lives.
“I took a decision that life was more important especially life of innocent people who were at a funeral. Mind you in Mambwe at Musamba, they went in people’s home pouring Nshima, relish.”
The UPND leader has vowed not to stop engaging the people of Zambia as it was his democratic right.
