misa-zambiaThe Media Institute of Southern Africa says online media personnel are forced to operate from underground because of the bad laws and a vindictive political regime.

MISA Zambia acting chairperson Hellen Mwale said as long as the current bad press laws continued to be in place, it will be very difficult for online media personnel to openly identify themselves.

She said the fight for a new constitution was part of the process of rectifying the problem that could see archaic and repressive laws changed.

“Part of the reason that online media owners do not identify themselves is because of the bad laws that exist. If we had good laws that protect the media it would be easy for them to come out in the open,” she said.

“This is part of the reason we need a new constitution we need a good constitution that will bring about good laws.”

Suspected online media practitioners have been hunted down by government and dragged before courts of law.

Three journalists are currently appearing before the courts of law for being suspected of contributing to critical online media publications.
