Clik here to view.Prominent politician Akashambatwa Mbikusita Lewanika says he is less hopeful that the next Zambian constitution will meet people’s expectations.
Aka who is a founding member of the MMD party said the nature of discourse and behavior on the constitution making process seemed headed for the same failed direction.
Below are Aka’s rather poetic thoughts:
BUT WHAT CONSTITUTION
Clearly on the constitution of Zambia and subject of how and which way forward, motives are as varied as they are questionable, principles are generally discarded and expediencies of the personal, partisan and sectional nature are riding high as is dishonesty and failure to adhere to facts and justice for all.
BUT this has been the case, AT LEAST!, since the eve of Independence itself and throughout even the latest process of attempting a constitutional reform. This cannot produce a constitution that meets the HISTORICAL challenge
It would be nice, easy, and straight forward and satisfactory IF the founding driving motivation, the whole process, the character of participation as well as the formulation of content was thoroughly non-partisan and non-sectarian. BUT this is absolutely NOT the case!
An unreserved go ahead would have been earned if the what was to be place on the table was reconstructing what was long negotiated and agreed basis of the independent dispensation and foundation of was to constitute the independent Zambia – to reverse the damage done in the build up and establishment of the one party state mentality and apparatus to the democratic rights and plurality of citizens and communities. BUT this is absolutely NOT the case!
There would be hope and prospect for progress if THE “silent” but well-known “national question” has NOT repeatedly been pleaded and repeatedly ignored and repeatedly left out from among the constitution proposals. BUT this is absolutely NOT the case.
THEREFORE, ON ALL THESE SCORES, AMONG OTHER EQUAL CONCERNS, ALL SIGNS AND LEAKS INDICATE THAT THE BEAUTIFUL ONES ARE STILL NOT BORN AND IT IS NOT YET UHURU!
Accordingly, under these circumstances, even though I condemn the dishonorable behavior, and even though I do not share the undemocratic motivations, of the Zambian Government (s), IN A REFERENDUM, I WOULD NOT VOTE FOR WHAT IS COMING OUT AS THE NEXT POSSIBLE ZAMBIAN CONSTITUTION.
