maize-zambia-reportsThe Patriotic Front has said it may lift the ban on the export of maize since the harvest is almost ready raising doubt about their seriousness to guarantee food security.

Agriculture Minister Wilbur Simuusa said the export of maize which has been banned from December last year following depleted reserves would help replenish the foreign reserves.

Simuusa said the export would not be without a blanket approach.

“Shortly we will start collecting the harvest, so why not? We need the money for having foreign exchange,” he said.

Simuusa said commercial farmers had asked for a leeway to export over 180, 000 metric tonnes of maize.

The export of maize if unregulated could expose the country to a food shortage especially after enduring a shaky season that was characterized by poor delivery of inputs.
