Justice Minister Wynter Kabimba has attempted to dilute the impact of President Michael Sata’s hard-line anti new constitution position by claiming the process was still course.
Kabimba claimed there was no contradiction between him and President Sata on the constitution but reaffirmed it was not a priority.
On Tuesday, President Sata called advocates of the new constitution yapping while a day earlier Kabimba had in a rare moment of graciousness called for dialogue between government and opposition political parties on the constitution.
“The issue of the constitution making process if we are not careful can derail our other programmes. This is what I think is the context of what the President was talking about,” said Kabimba.
“So there have been no contradictory statements I have said this in parliament many a time I have said this on many other fora that there have been no contradictions.”
Kabimba said President Sata may have dissolved the Technical Committee if he did not want a new constitution.
“The point I made last time is that if indeed his Excellency the president had taken a position that we do not need to conclude this process he would have dissolved the technical committee on the constitutional making process,” he said.
“So as far as I am concerned on my part as minister of justice the process is on but it should not be approached as if that is the only thing that we ought to do. We have many other issues alongside the constitutional making process.”
The constitution making process has stalled following President Sata’s turnaround choosing to frown upon anyone reminding him of the constitution.
