The Zambia Episcopal Conference says government should expedite the reinstatement of the fired nurses as the situation in health facilities was desperate.
ZEC spokesperson Father Cleopas Lungu said that it was sad that 19 nurses who were dismissed had reportedly died of depression.
Fr Lungu said government should think about the numerous patients in hospital who were going without nursing care.
He said that it was of no help playing tough when citizens who government undertook to look after were dying because of their decision to fire nurses.
Fr Lungu said even with the nurses reinstated there could still be a shortage in hospitals.
Government fired over 500 nurses in November last year for demanding the 100% salary increment promised to them and also demanding the harmonization of the pay roll system.
