Political activist Dante Saunders says Zambians must forget about Sata disciplining corrupt ministers because he was now a napping president who was too preoccupied with fatigue to handle national matters.
Saunders said those calling for for the suspension of North Western Province minister Nathaniel Mubukwanu who stole part of the Constituency Development Fund (CDF) for his Mongu central constituency were asking for too much from Sata.
The 2012 Auditor Generals report indicates that the Patrotic Front (PF) parliamentarian stole public funds allocated to the area, which he used for other purposes apart from the public works.
The report says Mubukwanu also disregarded procurement procedures when he engaged individuals and companies linked to himself, relatives, friends and other PF supporters to procure and supply goods and services for the constituency.
The report says Mubukwanu irregularly influenced the awarding of K452,000 CDF contracts to unqualified and bogus contractors.
One of the people who asked for Mubukwanu’s suspension was Transparency International Executive Director Goodwell Lungu who said Sata should immediately suspend the MP. But saunders said Sata was like a president who was in a deep slumber of sleep to be able to discipline corrupt ministers.
“It is too much for Sata to do this kind of work. He is tired. We are asking for too much from this man. The best thing is to keep reminding him of his own failures and wait for the right time to take him out of State House where he has been hiding. He is literally sleeping in State House instead of performing the duty of a president. State House is not a lounge and rest house,” he said.
Saunders said Zambians were dismayed to learn the wanton abuse of public resources by a PF minister who had the audacity to illegally direct the Mongu municipal council to award contracts to his people in two projects.
He said the Anti corruption Commission (ACC), which was supposed to be investigating and prosecuting these corrupt ministers was under Sata’s feet and too weak to perform their functions.
“This country is headed no where under the Patrotic Front and Sata in charge of it. Look what he has done to the ACC and all the law enforcement agencies. He has crippled them. They cannot arrest and prosecute anyone,” he said.
He said the ACC had all the information and details about the corrupt ministers and other public officials, but these institutions were scared of Sata’s wrath to enforce the law.
“There is no way in which the ACC and these other law enforcement agencies could swiftly deal with all culprits cited in the Auditor General’s report because they are under direct control of Sata and Sata is sleeping,” he said. It is not enough to continue paying lip service when huge public funds are being lost. Even if he is sleeping, let the people and all the civil society organization continue applying pressure for Sata to wake up and address the pile of problems that has accumulated during this period that he has been sleeping in State House,” he said.
Saunders said all ministers and other public officials who have been cited for corruption and other wrong doing must not hide under the idea that the PF was in power. He said these people were going to answer for their wrong doing when the PF vacates power.
He said the current scandals of corruption being unearthed in the government was proof that the PF an amalgamation of corrupt and incompetent elements.
