People’s Party’s President Mike Mulongoti says it is wrong for government to open the maize export window soon after declaring a bumper harvest.
Mulongoti said although the projection for a bumper harvest may have been right, the chances were that it had been played up.
He said Zambians should not ignore the fact that there was late input delivery.
Mulongoti said maize farming was a practical activity that did not need any justification.
“They have opened the export window, meaning whatever you have got here, now you want to send it away before you see what the actual harvest which is not right,” he said.
“The term (bumper harvest) comes with every bag so all the maize that they are talking about then they can open the export window.”
He said that rather than being prudent and thinking about storing the harvest for next season the PF government was in a hurry to sell.
“The climate is not predictable, suppose next year we don’t have rains what happens? I think the challenge to them is swallow their pride and say what we made is an estimate,” he said.
