Mr Facts: Unanswered Questions after ZAF Crash

The Zambia Airforce (ZAF) plane crashed, senior Air Force officers died and buried without any national recognition. A number of people including a senior Lawyer Sakwiba Sikota have expressed views on the inconsistencies in awarding of national mourning. I shall not however dwell on this point but circumstances that led to the death of General Muliokela the Deputy Air Commander and Colonel Brian Mweene though we shall talk about the third person.

There are several unanswered questions over the said Plane crash.

1. How many people died in this plane crash? I ask so because according to eye witnesses, three people died. Even the State owned Zambia National Broadcasting Corporation (ZNBC) aired a clip of eye witnesses testimony but the clip can not be traced any where.

2. Where was the third person buried and who was he or she?. The authorities should answer this question.

3. We were told by Defense Minister Edgar Lungu that between the two senior officers, one was being taught how to convert from being a transport pilot to commercial pilot. Who was training who? was it the General training the Colonel or Vise Versa?

4. If it was General Muliokela who was being trained why was he trying to convert? was he about to resign and relocate?

5. If it was Colonel Mweene was he also about to resign?. I’m aware that ZAF has a programme to train officers to convert to commercial piloting but this service is only offered to officers who are about to leave the air force to avoid them becoming destitutes. This is done to prepare them to join civilian life in case one wants to. That is why I’m asking the question of were these officers about to quit?

6. Where these officers being trailed?

7. Could it have been a political assassination? One very senior officer I spoke to before writing this article had the biggest question that I would also like to pose.

8. Why did these very senior officers die in their seat belts? why didn’t they utilise other safety measures including Parachutes? Where they tied to their seats by the unknown third person? and was the control center working and if yes who was at the control center.

In the coming weeks, I will try to look at the possible answers to these questions. Readers are encouraged to join the debate by emailing their thoughts to editor@zambiareports.com

Those who wish to have the identities unknown shall their wishes respected.
