In 2007 Michael Chilufya Sata then in the opposition was quoted by THE POST NEWSPAPER saying the following about China:
“MMD survives on the Chinese; the Chinese are very unpopular around the world and people have to fight them wherever they are.
“You people do not understand; the Chinese have invaded the world and if the Chinese are invading, and you people are proud of them coming to take up your jobs, that’s your problem. Me I am concerned about the poor people. I am concerned with the Chinese pushing wheelbarrows in Zambia.”
Asked why he was on a mission to discredit China in favour of Taiwan, he said: “They have already discredited themselves, nobody else has discredited them. They are not investors, they are invaders. They have invaded here, they are not bringing development but they are creating employment for themselves.
“I completed my mission, now I am going back to America specifically for the Chinese. I have done my job and a Chinese porter store my passport at the hotel yesterday (Monday) in London at Crown Plaza. I reported the matter to the police and they will deal with him.”
Three days ago, Sata made the following remarks about China when Chinese Vice-President paid a courtesy call as published by THE POST NEWSPAPER.
“Me and the ministers of finance and commerce are very grateful to China because before I joined politics, the Chinese people did a great deal for Zambia by building the TAZARA railway. So when you come here, we don’t even know how to say thank you. You have helped so many government parastatals,” he said.
“We don’t look at the Chinese as foreigners. We look at them as our brothers. We have so many things in common. There is unemployment in China and there is unemployment in Zambia. We want a railway line from Kasama to Nakonde, which will join the old TAZARA. You have come at the right time.”
President Sata said he wanted his two ministers for commerce and finance to go to China and see how best they could work closely with that country.
“The two of them, with me, form Siamese twins . So if anyone wants to kill China, they must kill us first. I have always been a labourer. I have always been a worker. I know the sufferings of the people. That is why I am always humbled with your sacrifice,” he said.
“We need an airline. Zambia is nothing without an airline. When we had an airline, we used to come straight to Beijing but now we don’t have transport to come to Beijing. We are begging.”
