UNZAThe University of Zambia Students Union has petitioned Parliament over the takeover of the Commonwealth Youth Development Centre.

Students took over the Commonwealth Centre on Wednesday noting that the 40 year lease agreement expired and announced that the facility will be used as hostels for students without accommodation.

The students are also demanding the takeover of houses and property under the Commonwealth to be handed over to them.

UNZASU president Shepherd Mukinga led his executive members to parliament buildings where they presented a petition through Mazabuka Central Member of Parliament Garry Nkombo.

Mukinga said the students had sought parliament’s intervention as it was a people’s representative body.

He said the students had backed their position with documentation and regretted that they had to endure intimidation from people like Sports Minister Chishimba Kambwili in their quest to have their voice heard.

The students said the facility which is run by the Ministry of Sports would be better off in the hands of the Ministry of Education.

Nkombo promised to deliver the petition to Speaker of the National Assembly.

The Commonwealth Youth Development Centre that was under the Commonwealth was left inactive after the British Council pulled out in May.
