Retail prices for mealie meal in Lusaka have hit a record high of K72,000, up from about K53,000 per 25kg bag.
At Kabwata market traders have increased the price of a 25kg Simba breakfast bag to over K70, 000 from an average of K55, 000, while Simba Milling Company has hiked the wholesale price for Breakfast to K58,000 per bag from around K52,000.
The traders talked to said they had hiked the price because the wholesale price of mealie-meal had also been increased by the millers.
Meanwhile, a critical shortage of mealie meal has persisted in Kabwe, Central Province.
ZANIS reports that long queues where noted at most retail shops and Millers premises for the commodities especially at National Milling Limited while other distributors like Shoprite had ran out.
At railways Market, a few shops that had the Mealie-Meal in stock were selling at K68, 000 per 25kg bag while in Bwacha Mealie-meal the commodity was going at K70, 000 per 25KG bag.
