It appears that the MMD is heading on a dangerous self destructive path. Following the expulsion of national secretary Major Richard Kachingwe and the defection of Mpongwe Member of Parliament Gabriel Namulambe, Zambians expected that the dust will settle in the former ruling party and chart the way forward.
Party president Dr Nevers Mumba recently noted that the expulsion of Maj Kachingwe and others leaving the party was squaring within the rebranding strategy.
However, barely a few days of turmoil in which Dr Mumba and some senior party members were incarcerated in Kitwe for a trumped up charge of unlawful assembly, another challenge has emerged. This issue seeks to shake the heart of the former ruling party as some National Executive Committee (NEC) members challenge the party presidency of Dr Mumba.
At a press briefing earlier, MMD vice president for administration Brian Chituwo hinted that both decisions made by Dr. Mumba to effect disciplinary action against Maj Kachingwe and the former national secretary’s attempt to invalidate the MMD presidency were not in line with the party constitution.
Dr. Chituwo spoke in the presence of Solwezi central Member of Parliament Lucky Mulusa and MMD national chairperson for Women Catherine Namugala said the MMD top leadership would soon sit to decide the way forward.
He has since condemned the violence that was exhibited by some youths when they hounded out major Kachingwe from the party secretariat.
Dr Chituwo also expressed indecisiveness as to whether Maj Kachingwe was still being considered for reinstatement as party national secretary by declining to comment saying the matter was still in court.
MMD national chairperson Catherine Namugala cleared the heavy suspicion that she has been planning to leave the party and reiterated her loyalty to the MMD.
