The Inspector General of police Stellah Libongani has refused to grand a permit to the opposition political parties who are planning to hold a combined rally in Lusaka.
MMD, UPND, ADD, ULP and ZDDM have organized a mass rally to be held in Mtendere over the weekend.
But sources have revealed that the Inspector General of police has instructed Lusaka Province police commissioner Joyce Kasosa not to issue a permit to the opposition parties until further notice.
When contacted for a comment, Kasosa confirmed that she was awaiting instructions from Libongani.
“The letter that the opposition parties wrote was addressed to the Inspector General of police and she is the one who will respond to their request not the division. If she gives us a go ahead, we will respond to them, but if they don’t get any reponce from the police, they cannot go ahead with the rally,” she said.
According to the letter signed by UPND, MMD, ULP, ADD and ZDDM leaderships, the opposition intends to address Lusaka residents on matter concerning the arrest of Nevers Mumba and four opposition MPs as well as the mealie meal shortage among other things.
