The opposition United Party for National Development (UPND) says they don’t feel safe as their cadres have been allegedly targeted for violent attacks.

UPND Lusaka province youth chairperson Nathan Phiri said that the recent killing of a UPND cadre in Mtendere East over the weekend and also the battering of another cadre Agness Ndhlovu at Soweto market raised doubt on whether anybody among the law enforcement agencies would protect opposition cadres.

There have been sustained intra-party clashes largely between youth cadres pledging loyalty to the ruling Patriotic Front and the UPND, even continuing weeks after the elections on January, 20 that ushered President Edgar Lungu.

Phiri accused the police of shielding perpetrators of violence as they were aligned to the ruling party.

He said that the UPND would stage a protest until the police arrested the culprits.

“We are giving the police a 48 hour ultimatum to apprehend the culprits who are well known PF cadres. We know that the police are scared to act because they fear the PF will also act on them,” he said.

“We are going to protest if no one is arrested within 48 hours even if it means going to camp at the Inspector General Stella Libongani’s office.“
