UNZA students are calling for the resignation of UNZASU president Ali Tunkara after he attempted to take his life for allegedly embezzling K50 million (KR 50, 000 rebased) loan from the Citizen Economic Empowerment Commission (CEEC).
According to sources, students at the country’s highest learning institution are organising themselves to force the resignation of Tunkara.
The students feel Tunkara has brought the name of the institution into disrepute for both financial irregularity and attempting to commit suicide.
They contend that a person who engages in fraudulent activities where he forges the Dean of Student’s signature can no longer be trusted with representing their interests.
The students say the latest development confirms reports that Tunkara was a PF surrogate intelligence office who was reporting his colleagues for recent demonstrations at the institution.
They have warned that if the UNZA executive, which will soon be outgoing in a few months does not take measures to replace Tunkara using constitutional provisions, the student movement will revolt.
Sources said some members of UNZASU committee blew the lid on Tunkara because he implicated innocent people in the scandal.
They said the student president had forged a signature on a letter from the Dean of Students and claimed that he was representing university youths when he applied for a K50 million loan from Citizens Economic Empowerment Committee (CEEC).
“He obtained the money under false pretence, he blew it and this created the impression that they shared among executive members,” the source said.
The source said in order to clear their names and distance themselves from the scandal, UNZASU committee members thought it wise to blow the issue and make him answerable.
“There was a general feeling that the law should be respected and that is how we exposed the issue in order for justice to prevail and clear some of our names which were implicated,” the source said.
Tunkara is currently admitted to the University Teaching Hospital High Cost wing for suspected poisoning.
