Youth cadres belonging to the ruling Patriotic Front party on Tuesday evening assaulted an opposition supporter of the United Party for National Development during a public meeting in Mpongwe’s Mwinuna area.
Dundumwezi UPND member of parliament Edgar Sing’ombe who led the campaign team in Mpongwe’s chief Mwinuna area said Pumulo Sililo sustained a deep cut on his upper lip after he was beaten at the party’s campaign meeting.
Sing’ombe said a man emerged from the crowd and asked them why they were having a meeting on the road and why there were so many people.
“He further said we are embarrassing Gabriel Namulambe. So we told him that if you are not one of us just keep quiet and listen.
Then he started moving away with about four other PF cadres and they seemed to have taken alcohol. Now one of our men, Pumulo just went behind to answer a call of nature and that’s how he was attacked. We were lucky because people stood up and stopped them,” he narrated.
Sing’ombe said the UPND campaign team left the area around 16:30 hours for the sake of peace and reported the matter to Mpongwe Police Station.
He said what happened in Mwinuna was terrible and the UPND expected the PF cadres to be tolerant and allow everyone to campaign freely.
Sing’ombe said the police must also move in and protect everyone participating in the Mpongwe parliamentary by-election.
And PF campaign manager in Mpongwe Jean Kapata has condemned the violent act.
