Vice-President Dr Guy Scott says the Malawian judge Lovemore Chikopa who was appointed by President Michael Sata to chair a judicial review tribunal is still in the country, staying at the expense of taxpayers.

Last year, President Sata suspended Supreme Court Judge Philip Musonda, and high court judges Charles Kajimanga and Nigel Mutuna for professional misconduct. He then appointed a tribunal to investigate the allegations and tasked Judge Chikopa of Malawi to head the tribunal.

The judges however petitioned President Sata’s move, arguing that the Head of State could not suspend the Judges on a matter that had never been heard by the Judicial Complaints Authority.

The Lusaka High Court ruled in favour of the complainants and stayed the suspension of the judges.

The State however appealed the ruling to the Supreme court and the matter is still awaiting final ruling.

Today Scott said the tribunal was still on standby and judge Chikopa was still in the country.

“The tribunal is still on and Judge Chikopa is still in the country,” Scott told parliament.
