Sata newPresident Michael Sata this morning warned diplomats accredited to Zambia to desist from visiting provinces in the country to inquire from the opposition about the governance of the country in an attack directed at British High Commissioner James Thornton.

Thornton was in Chipata, Eastern Province last week where he held a media briefing at Pine View Guest at which he expressed happiness at the Commonwealth’s team which was in Zambia carrying out a fact finding mission on the alleged breaches of human rights by the PF regime.

This has however not gone done well with Sata, who this morning was accrediting diplomats at State House, where he took a swipe at Thornton for his tour of the Eastern Province although he did not mention his name.

“Please don’t go in provinces and ask the opposition about governance. Don’t be like one of your brothers, don’t do what he did last week going to one of the provinces to ask about governance.

“I will not accept especially you ambassadors touring the provinces asking about governance. If you want to ask about governance, come to my office or government agency,” President Sata, who has previously told off diplomats like United States Ambassador Mark Storella, not to visit him but address his concerns with foreign affairs said.

President Sata also criticised the diplomats for ‘drinking cocktails’ instead of bringing more investment into the country.

“You are not only here for wearing nice ties and attending cocktails every time there is national day for each country. When you are diplomats bring here what is lacking in Zambia and attract Zambians to your countries,” Sata said.  “What I will not accept is for some of you, especially mere ambassadors and High Commissioners touring provinces and asking the provinces about governance.”

President Sata was receiving credentials at State House this morning from 13 Ambassadors and High Commissioners designated to Zambia.

Those that presented their credentials include Cuban ambassador to Zambia Caridad Gonzalez, South African high commissioner to Zambia Kgoshi Mathebe, who has replaced Moses Chikane, Kenyan high commissioner to Zambia Professor Ruthle Rano, who has replaced Dr. Kipyego Cheluget and Democratic Republic of Korea Ambassador designate Jo Yang Man.

Others are Hungarian Ambassador to Zambia Bela Laszlo, Irish Ambassador to Zambia Finbar O’Brien, New Zealand ambassador to Zambia Richard Stuart Mann, Ethiopian Ambassador to Zambia Koang Dung and Canadian high commissioner to Zambia Alexandre Levenque.

The rest are Christopher Salamanis of Greece, Koenraad Adam of Belgium, Agis Loizou of Cyprus, Dan Hayun of Israel and Touhid Hossain of Bangladesh.
