kennedy-SakeniChief government spokesperson Kennedy Sakeni says it is unfair for former Republican president Rupiah Banda to accuse government of persecuting him through the ongoing investigations in his alleged corrupt activities while in office.

Sakeni, who has been admitted to the University Teaching Hospital and is currently on bed rest, says Banda, like any citizen, in his situation, is enjoying his full human rights and freedoms such as legal representation, including the assumption that he is innocent until proven guilty.

He wondered what persecution the former head of state is complaining about when he is still enjoying the privileges that go with the status of his office such as state security.

Sakeni has since challenged Mr. Banda to point out any injustice or violation of his human rights he has suffered during the ongoing investigations.

In a statement, Sakeni states that it has to be realized that the country is governed by the rule of law and that whoever is suspected of any wrongdoing is called to account for their actions, in accordance with the law.

He adds that there is nothing wrong with the people of Zambia asking their former head of state to account for his actions in the manner he presided over their resources while he was in office.

Sakeni states that the law is very clear in providing for the removal of a former president’s immunity, when there is suspicion of any wrong doing.

He adds that contrary to his lamentations, Banda will be prosecuted and not persecuted for the wrongdoings he is suspected to have committed while in office.

The chief government spokesperson says the PF government is a responsible government which has a duty to ensure that public resources benefit the citizens.
